Why Practice Spelling Words?
Cognitive Development
Fifth graders can reason from a word's origin to its spelling, which is the single most transferable spelling skill there is.
Reading Improvement
This is the vocabulary of fifth-grade textbooks; a student who can spell environment reads a science chapter faster.
Writing Skills
Precise words make precise writing, and a fifth grader who can spell criticize and ambition can write what they actually mean.
Spelling Tips for Grade 5 Students
Effective strategies to help grade 5 students master spelling words.
Ambition, decision, division. The sound is nearly identical and the spelling is not — which is why these appear in bees so often.
Bouquet looks impossible until you know it is French. Origin explains more English spellings than any rule does.
Write down every word you get wrong and revisit it a week later. Misses cluster around a few patterns, and the list gets short faster than you expect.
Grade 5 spelling questions, answered
How many spelling words should a fifth grader learn each week?
Fifteen to twenty, and this is the age to let the student choose some. Ownership does more for retention at this level than volume does.
What makes fifth grade spelling harder than fourth?
Unstressed syllables. In environment and familiar, the vowel you cannot hear is exactly the one you have to get right.
How do I prepare a fifth grader for a school spelling bee?
Work from this list daily, then have someone read words aloud while your child spells them standing up. Spelling at a desk and spelling on your feet are genuinely different skills.
How were these words chosen?
They are pitched at the vocabulary a student at this level is typically ready for, and sorted into easy, medium and challenging so you can start at the right place. They are not an official competition list — for that, see the Scripps study materials.
