View DefinitionsAbout Grade 7 Spelling Bee Words
Our grade 7 spelling bee word list is pitched to match the vocabulary and spelling skills appropriate for students at this level. These words are selected based on educational standards, frequency of use, and developmental appropriateness.
The words are organized into three difficulty levels to help students progressively build their skills:
- Easy: Precise words a seventh grader will meet in assigned reading: accurate, barrier, dialect, drought.
- Medium: Latin-derived academic vocabulary: adolescent, benevolent, deliberate, eloquent, feasible.
- Challenging: Competition-level words, most of them French or Greek: acquiesce, connoisseur, entrepreneur, hierarchy.
Why Practice Spelling Words?
Cognitive Development
Seventh graders can hold a word's origin, its structure and its meaning together, which is how strong spellers actually work.
Reading Improvement
This is the vocabulary of essays and set texts; recognizing benevolent on sight saves a trip to the glossary.
Writing Skills
By seventh grade, spelling errors distract a reader from the argument. Accurate spelling is part of being taken seriously.
Spelling Tips for Grade 7 Students
Effective strategies to help grade 7 students master spelling words.
Group the French words together — connoisseur, entrepreneur, bureaucracy. They share habits, and learning them as a family is far faster than one at a time.
Discipline, deliberate, adolescent. The vowel nobody pronounces is the one that decides whether the word is right.
Spell to another person rather than onto paper. It is the format every bee uses and the one least like ordinary schoolwork.
Grade 7 spelling questions, answered
How many spelling words should a seventh grader learn each week?
Twenty to twenty-five, weighted toward words already missed. At this level, reviewing failures beats meeting new words.
Why are the challenging seventh grade words so hard?
Most are borrowed whole from French or Greek and keep their original spelling. Acquiesce and connoisseur cannot be sounded out in English because they are not English spellings.
Is this list enough for a regional competition?
It is a solid foundation, not a complete preparation. Regional and national rounds draw on the official Scripps list of about 4,000 words and, in later rounds, the Merriam-Webster Unabridged dictionary.
How were these words chosen?
They are pitched at the vocabulary a student at this level is typically ready for, and sorted into easy, medium and challenging so you can start at the right place. They are not an official competition list — for that, see the Scripps study materials.
