Our grade 2 spelling bee word list is pitched to match the vocabulary and spelling skills appropriate for students at this level. These words are selected based on educational standards, frequency of use, and developmental appropriateness.
The words are organized into three difficulty levels to help students progressively build their skills:
- Easy: Everyday two-syllable words like apple, candy and early, where each syllable is easy to hear.
- Medium: Words that add a third syllable or an awkward vowel team — animal, basket, enough.
- Challenging: Longer words with a silent letter or an unstressed ending: another, carefully, elephant, favorite.

Effective strategies to help grade 2 students master spelling words.
Clap once per beat: e-le-phant is three claps, three chunks to spell. Long words stop looking long.
Second graders rarely miss the first sound. The trouble is at the end — the -y in early, the -ful in carefully.
Short and frequent beats long and rare. Ten minutes after dinner is plenty at this age.

How many spelling words should a second grader learn each week?
Ten to twelve is a comfortable pace. Pick a few from each difficulty band rather than working straight down the list — a run of hard words in a row is how children decide they are bad at spelling.
My child can read these words but cannot spell them. Is that normal?
Entirely. Reading is recognition and spelling is recall, and recognition runs years ahead. The gap closes with writing practice, not more reading.
What is the best way to practice spelling words at this age?
Say it, spell it aloud, then write it. Saying the word first stops a child copying letter shapes without hearing the sounds behind them.
