View DefinitionsAbout Grade 4 Spelling Bee Words
Our grade 4 spelling bee word list is pitched to match the vocabulary and spelling skills appropriate for students at this level. These words are selected based on educational standards, frequency of use, and developmental appropriateness.
The words are organized into three difficulty levels to help students progressively build their skills:
- Easy: Clear, useful words that follow the patterns of the last two years: breeze, cabinet, elbow, fabric.
- Medium: Words with an unstressed ending that has to be learned rather than heard: accident, elegant, fortune.
- Challenging: The ie/ei words and the double-consonant traps: ceiling, foreign, beautiful, embarrass, definite.
Why Practice Spelling Words?
Cognitive Development
Fourth graders can hold a rule and its exception in mind at once, which is what ie/ei actually requires.
Reading Improvement
Much of the vocabulary in fourth-grade science and social studies is on this list, so spelling and comprehension reinforce each other.
Writing Skills
Spelling confidence is what lets a fourth grader use ancient or elegant in a sentence instead of retreating to old and nice.
Spelling Tips for Grade 4 Students
Effective strategies to help grade 4 students master spelling words.
Ceiling takes ei after c. Ancient and foreign break the rule outright. Learn the rule and its three or four famous exceptions together, or the rule will mislead.
Beau-ti-ful. Em-bar-rass. Saying a word in pieces exposes the double r that silent reading hides.
A word used in a sentence about your own day is remembered. A word used in a sentence about a generic dog is not.
Grade 4 spelling questions, answered
How many spelling words should a fourth grader learn each week?
Fifteen is reasonable. At this level it matters more that the words are grouped by pattern than that there are lots of them.
Why does my fourth grader keep misspelling beautiful and definite?
Both have an unstressed vowel you cannot hear — the u in beautiful, the second i in definite. Exaggerating the pronunciation while writing (def-i-nite) fixes it faster than repetition does.
Is fourth grade too early for spelling bee preparation?
No, and it is a good year to start. Fourth graders are old enough to work from a list independently and young enough that the habit forms without much resistance.
How were these words chosen?
They are pitched at the vocabulary a student at this level is typically ready for, and sorted into easy, medium and challenging so you can start at the right place. They are not an official competition list — for that, see the Scripps study materials.
