Our grade 3 spelling bee word list is pitched to match the vocabulary and spelling skills appropriate for students at this level. These words are selected based on educational standards, frequency of use, and developmental appropriateness.
The words are organized into three difficulty levels to help students progressively build their skills:
- Easy: Words built on patterns a third grader already knows — cheese, forest, danger.
- Medium: Double consonants in the middle, where the temptation is to write only one: address, balloon, effort.
- Challenging: Words that break the phonetic rules learned so far: although, breathe, calendar, especially.

Spelling Tips for Grade 3 Students
Effective strategies to help grade 3 students master spelling words.
Address, balloon, batter, effort. When a word feels like it has a beat in the middle, check whether a consonant doubles there.
Although, breathe and calendar do not follow the rules. Treat them as words to be known, not words to be worked out.
Ask your child to write the version they think is wrong next to the right one. Seeing calender beside calendar makes the correct spelling stick.
Grade 3 spelling questions, answered
How many spelling words should a third grader learn each week?
Twelve to fifteen. This is also the year to start keeping a list of words your child has actually missed — that list is worth more than any prepared one.
Which third grade words cause the most trouble?
Double consonants and silent letters. Address, embarrass and although trip up more third graders than any long word does.
Should my third grader be learning spelling rules?
Yes, but a few at a time and always with examples in front of them. A rule learned from five words the child can see beats a rule recited from memory.
