Getting ready for a bee
Ten or fifteen minutes a day beats one long session a week.
In bee mode, ask for the definition before you spell, the way spellers ask a pronouncer. It helps with words that sound alike.
Retry the words you missed at the end of each quiz, then again the next day. A word is learned when it's right two days running.

Which words are on the 5th grade spelling test?
Each quiz picks words at random from our 50-word Grade 5 list: 20 easy, 20 medium and 10 challenging. Choose a band or mix all three. The list is our own selection for practice, not an official bee list.
What age is the 5th grade list for?
It's written for students around 10–11 years old. The −tion and −sion endings, and words whose spelling makes sense only from their origin.
How does bee mode work?
You get one try per word and 30 seconds from the first time you hear it, with no letter count on screen. You can hear the word again or ask for its definition and part of speech, the way spellers can ask a pronouncer. The time limit is our practice setting, not a contest rule.
What happens to the words my child misses?
The results screen lists every missed word with its correct spelling and a button to hear it. You can retry just those words straight away, or have the list emailed to you for later.
