- 1Pick the grade list and decide how far down it you will go. Starting in the easy band and working down keeps early rounds moving.
- 2Print the one-page list for every student a fortnight ahead, so nobody is competing on words they have never seen.
- 3Choose a pronouncer who will read each word twice, give the definition on request, and use it in a sentence. Those three are what spellers are entitled to ask for.
- 4Agree the rules out loud before the first word: one attempt, restarts allowed until a letter is spoken, and the pronouncer's call is final.
- 5Keep a written record of each word given. It settles disputes and saves you writing next year's list from scratch.
The paid kits include a fuller pronouncer script, a tracking sheet and a printable certificate.
