Our grade 6 spelling bee word list is pitched to match the vocabulary and spelling skills appropriate for students at this level. These words are selected based on educational standards, frequency of use, and developmental appropriateness.
The words are organized into three difficulty levels to help students progressively build their skills:
- Easy: Sixth-grade words with regular patterns: abrupt, cancel, eager, blizzard.
- Medium: Academic vocabulary with predictable endings: adequate, boundary, ceremony, democracy, efficient.
- Challenging: Words that defeat sounding-out entirely: bureau, conscious, exaggerate, fluorescent, gauge.

Democracy is demos plus kratos, people plus rule. A word you can decompose is a word you can rebuild.
Deceive, receive, ceiling. The c is the signal. It is one of the few English rules that mostly holds.
Bureau, gauge and fluorescent cannot be reasoned out. Separate them from the rest and drill them as pure memory.

How many spelling words should a sixth grader learn each week?
Twenty is manageable if they are grouped by root or pattern. Twenty unrelated words is not.
Which sixth grade words are hardest?
The French loan words — bureau, fatigue, gauge. English phonics offers no help with them, so they have to be learned as shapes.
How should a sixth grader prepare for a regional spelling bee?
Master this list first, then move to the official Scripps study material, Words of the Champions. Practice asking for definition, part of speech and language of origin — you are allowed all three, and they narrow the field considerably.
